Veteran cricket administrator and current BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla is poised to take over as the interim president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after Roger Binny turns 70 next month, sources in the BCCI confirmed to PTI on Monday.
As per BCCI’s constitution, office-bearers must vacate their posts upon reaching the age limit of 70. Binny, who turns 70 on July 19, will step down from the role he assumed in 2022, when he succeeded Sourav Ganguly.
Shukla to Take Charge Until September AGM
Shukla, 65, is expected to lead the board in an interim capacity until fresh elections are conducted during the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September.
“As per convention, the senior-most office-bearer takes charge in such a scenario. He (Shukla) will perform that role until fresh elections are held,” a BCCI source said.
A seasoned politician and cricket administrator, Shukla is also a sitting Rajya Sabha MP from the Congress Party. He has held several key roles within Indian cricket’s governing body, including serving as the chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the past.
Roger Binny’s Contribution to Indian Cricket
A legendary former India all-rounder, Roger Binny was part of the 1983 World Cup-winning team and later went on to coach the India U-19 squad that clinched the 2000 ICC U-19 World Cup. Before taking over the BCCI presidency in 2022, Binny served as the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association.
His presidency came during a critical period for Indian cricket, overseeing the continued growth of the IPL and ongoing infrastructure development across domestic cricket.
The upcoming BCCI elections in September are likely to set the tone for the next phase of Indian cricket administration, as the sport continues to expand its commercial and global footprint.
