Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) to concentrate on preparations for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The 36-year-old made his decision public on Monday, stating his intent to prioritise T20 commitments, including the Big Bash League (BBL) and other global franchise leagues.
Maxwell, who recently featured for the Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 season, ends his ODI career with an impressive record—having played 149 matches for Australia.
A Career Marked by Explosive Brilliance
Known for his aggressive style and match-winning ability, Maxwell leaves behind a formidable legacy in ODI cricket. He maintained a strike rate of 126, the second-highest in the history of the format, trailing only Andre Russell of the West Indies.
His most iconic performance came during the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, where he played arguably one of the greatest ODI innings ever. In a dramatic match against Afghanistan, Australia collapsed to 91/7, but Maxwell—suffering from severe cramps in scorching heat—delivered a heroic knock of 201 off 128 balls*, rescuing the team with a 202-run stand alongside captain Pat Cummins. That innings played a pivotal role in Australia’s road to the title, which they clinched by defeating India in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
Looking Ahead to T20 Goals
With his ODI journey now behind him, Maxwell shifts his full focus to T20 cricket, eyeing success in the 2026 T20 World Cup. “It’s been an incredible ride in ODIs, but I believe the time is right to focus all my energy on the shorter format,” Maxwell stated.
He continues to remain an integral part of Australia’s T20 setup, with selectors and fans alike hopeful that his experience and firepower will play a crucial role in their World Cup campaign next year.
