India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has officially appointed Vikram Singh Mehta as its new Chairman, succeeding Venkataramani Sumantran, who completed his five-year term on the board of InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, the parent company of IndiGo.
Mehta, a seasoned leader and board member of IndiGo since May 2022, brings with him decades of experience from both public service and corporate leadership. A former Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer, he previously served as Chairman of the Shell Group of Companies in India and held senior roles at Shell in Egypt. He has also been associated with several reputed corporate boards across industries.
A distinguished academic, Mr. Mehta is an alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, and holds master’s degrees in Politics and Economics from Oxford University and in Energy Economics from Tufts University.
The airline acknowledged the pivotal role of outgoing Chairman Dr. Sumantran, who was instrumental in steering IndiGo’s board during the post-COVID recovery period, leading to significant operational growth over the last three years.
Alongside Mehta, IndiGo’s board includes six other members, including co-founder Rahul Bhatia, according to the company’s official website.
In a related development, IndiGo’s co-founder and promoter Rakesh Gangwal, along with his family trust, offloaded a 5.72% stake in the airline, amounting to ₹11,564 crore, through open market transactions on May 27, 2025.
The leadership change and stake sale signal a new phase in IndiGo’s ongoing expansion and strategic growth within India’s booming aviation sector.
