Odisha Braces for Heavy Rainfall as Low-Pressure System Intensifies Over Bay of Bengal

Odisha began witnessing widespread rainfall on Friday as a fresh low-pressure system developed over the east-central Bay of Bengal. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is likely to intensify into a depression near the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coast by evening, triggering heavy showers across the state for the next three days.

Coastal and southern districts have already reported intense rainfall since morning, with the IMD warning of possible flooding in low-lying areas, waterlogging, and disruption of normal life.

IMD Warnings Issued

  • Orange Alert: Very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds (40–60 kmph) is expected in Koraput, Malkangiri (Day 1) and Nabarangpur (Day 2).

  • Yellow Alert: Heavy rain is forecast for multiple districts including Rayagada, Kalahandi, Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Khordha, Balasore, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Kendrapara, and Jagatsinghpur over the next two days.

  • Wind Warnings: Gusty surface winds ranging from 20–60 kmph are likely across several districts, increasing the risk of tree falls, power disruption, and crop damage.

Schools Closed, Fishermen Warned

In response to the weather situation, the Malkangiri district administration has ordered closure of all schools on Friday. Authorities have also advised fishermen to stay away from the sea due to rough conditions along the Odisha coast.

The state government has directed district administrations to remain on high alert, with preparedness measures in place to handle emergencies.

Three Days of Widespread Rain

  • Day 1 (Sept 26–27): Heavy to very heavy rain in Koraput & Malkangiri; yellow alerts across Rayagada, Kalahandi, Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Khordha, and other districts.

  • Day 2 (Sept 27–28): Very heavy rain in Nabarangpur; scattered heavy rainfall likely in southern and coastal belts.

  • Flood risk in rivers and low-lying areas of southern Odisha.

  • Traffic disruption on highways and rural roads.

  • Agricultural impact due to waterlogging in paddy fields.

Authorities have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, stay updated with official forecasts, and take safety precautions during thunderstorms and lightning.
