Gayaji, Bihar (August 22): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday strongly advocated for the newly introduced bills that propose the removal of Prime Ministers and Chief Ministers upon arrest, with a provision of no bail for 30 days. He asserted that such legislation is necessary to ensure accountability and to strengthen the fight against corruption.
Addressing a public meeting in Bihar’s Gayaji, PM Modi questioned the double standards that allow political leaders to remain in office while under arrest, whereas ordinary government employees lose their jobs within hours of being jailed.
“Today, no one should be above the law. But how is it possible that some Chief Ministers, Ministers, or even Prime Ministers enjoy power while staying in jail? If a government employee is imprisoned for 50 hours, he automatically loses his job, be it a driver, a clerk, or a peon. But a CM, a Minister, or even a PM can continue in government from jail,” the Prime Minister said.
Indirect Jibe at Arvind Kejriwal
In a veiled reference to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, who was arrested on March 21, 2024, in connection with the alleged liquor scam case but continued as Chief Minister from Tihar Jail, PM Modi said, “Some time ago, we saw how files were being signed from jail and how government orders were given from jail. If leaders have such an attitude, how can we fight corruption?”
The Prime Minister stressed that the NDA government’s anti-corruption drive applies equally to all, including the Prime Minister himself. “The NDA government has brought a law against corruption, and the Prime Minister also comes under its purview,” he added.
A Push for Stronger Accountability
The proposed bills, once passed, are expected to set a precedent in Indian politics by holding the highest offices accountable under the same standards as ordinary citizens. By introducing a 30-day no-bail clause, the government aims to curb the misuse of political power and restore public trust in governance.
