New Delhi, Aug 20, 2025: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked by a man during a Jan Sunwai (public hearing) at her residence on Wednesday, sparking outrage across political circles and raising questions about security arrangements.
The Incident
Police said the attacker, identified as Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya (41), a resident of Rajkot, first handed over some papers to the Chief Minister before suddenly shouting and striking her. He was immediately restrained and handed over to police, though eyewitnesses claim he was thrashed by the public before being taken into custody.
Initial reports suggested Gupta had been slapped, but Delhi BJP chief Virendraa Sachdeva clarified that the man grabbed the CM’s hand, triggering a scuffle during which her head may have hit a corner. Doctors later confirmed that she is stable but in shock.
Who Is the Accused?
According to police, Sakariya belongs to a family of rickshaw pullers in Rajkot. His relatives said he is mentally unstable and an animal lover, adding that he traveled to Delhi after a recent verdict on stray dogs. His mother revealed she was unaware of his plans to meet the Chief Minister. Delhi Police has also contacted Gujarat Police to verify his background.
Political Reactions
The incident has triggered sharp reactions across party lines:
-
Virendraa Sachdeva (Delhi BJP chief) said the CM remains determined to continue Jan Sunwai sessions, calling her a “strong woman with a clear commitment to Delhi.”
-
Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa termed the attack a “political conspiracy by rivals.”
-
Minister Kapil Mishra called it an “unforgivable crime,” stating that those behind such acts are “cowards and criminals.”
-
Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav said the assault exposes the state of women’s safety, noting that if the CM is not safe, ordinary citizens are even more vulnerable.
-
AAP MLA Atishi described the incident as “highly condemnable” and stressed that violence has no place in democracy.
Security Concerns
Rekha Gupta enjoys Z-plus security, and all visitors to her residence undergo strict checks, including baggage screening. The incident has therefore raised serious concerns about how the attacker managed to strike the Chief Minister despite high-level protection.
Police officials confirmed that a detailed inquiry has been launched. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) reached the CM’s residence immediately after the incident.
