New Delhi, August 5 — India’s railway infrastructure is set for a major upgrade with the upcoming launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, the country’s first-ever sleeper version of the acclaimed semi-high-speed train series. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, speaking at a public event in Gujarat on August 3, confirmed that the much-anticipated service will roll out in September 2025.
Developed by BEML (Bharat Earth Movers Limited) with technological support from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), the Vande Bharat Sleeper will mark a significant step forward in long-distance train travel in India. With the ability to reach speeds of up to 180 km/h, the train is designed to provide an efficient and comfortable alternative to overnight air travel.
High-End Features for Enhanced Passenger Experience
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will comprise 16 coaches, including AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier, all designed with modern aesthetics and functionality. Aimed at middle-class families, the new sleeper service will offer premium features at reasonable fares.

Routes Still Under Finalisation
While the exact routes have not yet been confirmed, potential corridors under consideration include New Delhi–Howrah, New Delhi–Mumbai, New Delhi–Pune, and New Delhi–Secunderabad. These long-distance routes are expected to benefit significantly from the introduction of a high-speed overnight travel option.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper will be a key addition to the Indian Railways fleet, alongside other modern services like Namo Bharat and Amrit Bharat. As part of the government’s railway modernisation drive, the sleeper version is expected to revolutionise overnight train journeys across the country.
