Indore Retains Title as India’s Cleanest City for Eighth Year in a Row in Swachh Survekshan 2024–25

New Delhi, July 17: Indore has once again been crowned India’s cleanest city in the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25, securing the top spot for an unprecedented eighth consecutive year. The announcement was made during a prestigious awards ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, where President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards.

Following Indore, Surat and Navi Mumbai secured the second and third positions respectively in the nationwide cleanliness rankings.

Noida Leads in 3–10 Lakh Population Category

In the 3–10 lakh population category, Noida emerged as the cleanest city, with Chandigarh and Mysuru bagging the second and third spots respectively.

Organised by MoHUA Under Swachh Bharat Mission

The awards are part of the Swachh Survekshan, the world’s largest urban cleanliness survey, conducted annually by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The survey evaluates cities on various parameters including waste management, sanitation infrastructure, and citizen participation.

Indore’s Cleanliness Model: A Community Movement

Indore’s continued dominance is credited to a mix of innovative governance, strict enforcement, and active citizen involvement. The city has implemented:

  • Strict waste segregation at source

  • Incremental garbage reduction policies

  • Extensive public awareness campaigns

  • Strong participation from local communities, including rickshaw drivers, vendors, and small businesses

This grassroots approach has turned cleanliness into a community-driven mission, setting a national benchmark.

Political Praise and Civic Pride

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav had earlier expressed confidence in Indore’s win. “This new category recognises past performance and future potential. Indore deserves this position,” he said, underscoring the city’s reputation as a model for sustainable urban cleanliness.
