Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Announces 125 Units of Free Electricity for All Households from August 1

Patna, July 17: In a major pre-poll announcement, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday declared that all domestic households in the state will receive 125 units of electricity free of cost every month starting August 1, a move set to benefit 1.67 crore families.

Sharing the decision on social media, the Chief Minister said, “From the very beginning, we have been committed to providing electricity to everyone at affordable rates. Now, from the electricity bill for the month of July, all domestic consumers will not have to pay for up to 125 units.”

This announcement is part of a larger plan by Nitish Kumar, who is seeking a record 10th term as Chief Minister in the upcoming Assembly elections. The free electricity scheme is expected to particularly benefit rural and lower-income households.

Focus on Solar Energy Expansion

Apart from subsidized electricity, the Chief Minister also outlined a bold solar energy expansion plan. Over the next three years, the Bihar government plans to install solar power plants on household rooftops or nearby public spaces.

For families living below the poverty line, the full cost of installing these solar systems will be completely covered by the government under the Kutir Jyoti Yojana. For others, the government will provide substantial financial assistance.

“The goal is to generate up to 10,000 megawatts of solar power within three years,” Nitish Kumar said, emphasizing Bihar’s push towards sustainable and clean energy solutions.

This combination of free electricity and renewable energy support is being seen as a dual strategy to ease household power expenses while boosting the state’s green energy capacity.
