Hyderabad, July 13, 2025 — Legendary Tollywood actor and former lawmaker Kota Srinivasa Rao passed away at the age of 83 in the early hours of Sunday at his residence in Filmnagar, Hyderabad, following age-related health complications, his family confirmed.
He is survived by his wife, Rukmini, and two daughters. His son, Kota Prasad Rao, tragically died in a road accident in 2010.
A Cinematic Giant of Indian Cinema
With an illustrious career spanning over four decades, Kota Srinivasa Rao appeared in more than 750 films across Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam languages. Renowned for his versatility, he played memorable roles as a villain, character artist, and comedian, earning a special place in the hearts of millions.
His final Telugu film appearance was in Suvarna Sundari (2023).
From Stage to Screen
Born on July 10, 1942, in Kankipadu, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, Rao hailed from a culturally enriched family. Encouraged by his father Kota Seetharama Anasuyamma, Rao developed a passion for acting early on and actively participated in stage dramas during his student days.
Before joining the film industry, he worked at the State Bank of India while pursuing theatre on the side. His cinematic debut came in 1978 with the Telugu film Pranam Khareedu, marking the beginning of a prolific journey in Indian cinema.
Accolades and Recognition
Rao’s contribution to Indian cinema was widely celebrated. He received nine Nandi Awards from the Andhra Pradesh government and was conferred with the Padma Shri in 2015 by then-President Pranab Mukherjee.
He also lent his voice to songs in a few Telugu films, showcasing his artistic range.
A Brief Stint in Politics
Apart from cinema, Rao served as an elected MLA from Vijayawada East constituency from 1999 to 2004, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His tenure in politics reflected his deep commitment to public service.

Tributes poured in from across the nation, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the condolences.
“Anguished by the passing of Shri Kota Srinivas Rao Garu. He will be remembered for his cinematic brilliance and versatility… He was also at the forefront of social service,” PM Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, Governor Abdul Nazeer, Telangana CM A. Revanth Reddy, and YSRCP chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy also expressed their grief.
“My tributes to Padma Shri awardee Rao, who mesmerised generations with his acting brilliance,” said Naidu.
“His legacy will be etched in the history of Telugu cinema forever,” added Governor Nazeer.
Kota Srinivasa Rao’s death marks an irreparable loss to Indian cinema, particularly the Telugu film industry. His contributions to art, politics, and culture will continue to inspire future generations.
