PM Modi Unveils Vision to Redefine BRICS During India’s 2026 Presidency

Rio de Janeiro, July 7, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India will give a “new form” to BRICS when it assumes the presidency of the multilateral grouping in 2026, redefining it as Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability.

Speaking at the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, PM Modi said,

“Just as during our G-20 presidency, we prioritised the Global South, our BRICS chairmanship will focus on people-centricity and humanity-first values.”

He emphasised post-pandemic recovery, global health, and climate action, reinforcing the need for unified global responses to shared challenges.

“The COVID pandemic taught us that viruses do not need visas, and solutions too should not be limited by passports. We need joint efforts for common challenges,” he stated.

India’s Stand on Artificial Intelligence

Addressing a session on Artificial Intelligence, Modi reiterated India’s ethical approach:

“We believe in AI as a tool to enhance human values and capabilities. Guided by the mantra of ‘AI for All’, India is actively using AI across sectors.”
He stressed that AI governance and innovation must progress hand in hand, reflecting India’s balanced approach.

Strengthening Global Ties

On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi held key bilateral meetings with:

  • Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez

  • Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim

  • Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi

  • Bolivian President Luis Alberto Arce Catacora

Talks focused on digital technology, critical minerals, space, healthcare, and trade diversification. Modi congratulated Bolivia on its upcoming 200th year of independence, underlining India’s commitment to strengthening ties with Latin America.
