Hirakud Dam to Release Season’s First Rainwater on July 6 Amid Heavy Rain Forecast

Sambalpur, Odisha: The Hirakud Dam, the world’s longest earthen dam, is set to release its first rainwater of the season at 10 AM on July 6 (Sunday), as per an official announcement by the dam’s Chief Engineer Susil Kumar Behera.

The decision comes in response to rising water levels in the reservoir following heavy and continuous rainfall in the upper catchment areas. The current water level has touched 603 feet, just short of the expected 605 feet mark typically recorded by the end of July.

Precautionary Measures Initiated

To prevent any flood-like situation, the district collectors of 13 low-lying districts have been informed in advance. Authorities have been directed to implement precautionary measures to safeguard residents and infrastructure in vulnerable regions.

Chief Engineer Behera stated, “The reservoir has reached a significant level due to upstream rainfall. Accordingly, it has been decided to release the first floodwater to maintain dam safety and prevent downstream flooding.”

Weather Alerts Issued by IMD

Adding to the urgency, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning across several Odisha districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph until July 6.

The IMD has urged residents in affected districts to remain alert and take safety precautions, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Dam Management Strategy

The Hirakud Dam plays a critical role in flood control, irrigation, and hydroelectric power generation across Odisha. Controlled release of water is essential during the monsoon to maintain reservoir safety and protect downstream districts such as Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, and Jagatsinghpur.

With the dam nearing capacity and continued rainfall predicted, water management teams will remain on high alert over the coming days.
