Indian-British Billionaire Gopichand Hinduja, Chairman of Hinduja Group, Passes Away at 85

Indian-British billionaire and Hinduja Group Chairman Gopichand Parmanand Hinduja passed away at the age of 85, marking the end of an era for one of the most influential business families in the world. The news of his demise was confirmed by Tory peer and British lawmaker Rami Ranger, who shared a heartfelt tribute on Tuesday.

Ranger, a member of the British House of Lords, described Hinduja as “one of the most gracious, humble, and loyal friends,” expressing deep sorrow over the loss.

“Dear friends, with a heavy heart, I share with you the tragic loss of our beloved friend, Mr GP Hinduja, who has departed for his heavenly abode. His passing marks the end of an era — he was a well-wisher of the community and a guiding force,” Ranger said in his statement.

“I had the privilege of knowing him over many years; his qualities were unique — a tremendous sense of humour, commitment to the community and India, and constant support for good causes. He has left a huge vacuum that will be difficult to fill. May he rest in peace. Om Shanti,” he added.

Who Was Gopichand Parmanand Hinduja?

Popularly known as GP Hinduja, he was one of the world’s most respected industrialists and philanthropists. Born in 1940 in India, he played a central role in expanding the Hinduja Group into a global business empire with interests across sectors including automotive, banking, energy, and healthcare.

Following the passing of his elder brother Srichand Hinduja in 2023, GP Hinduja took over as Chairman of the Hinduja Group, steering the multi-billion-dollar conglomerate into a new era of leadership and innovation.

He was also the Chairman of Hinduja Automotive Ltd, one of the key divisions of the group, and continued to advocate for India’s growth and global economic partnerships until his final years.

UK’s Richest Individual for Seven Consecutive Years

Gopichand Hinduja consistently featured at the top of the UK Sunday Times Rich List, being named the richest individual in the United Kingdom for seven years in a row. The Hinduja family’s wealth was estimated in the tens of billions, reflecting their vast global investments and diversified portfolio.
