Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir (October 13, 2025): Two terrorists were neutralised by Indian Army troops in an encounter in the Machhal sector of Kupwara district on Monday evening, officials confirmed. The operation was launched after intelligence inputs indicated a likely infiltration attempt across the Line of Control (LoC).
According to an official statement, the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) jointly carried out the counter-terror operation based on specific inputs corroborated by multiple agencies.
“Alert troops spotted suspicious movement and challenged the infiltrators, who opened indiscriminate fire. The troops retaliated effectively, neutralising two terrorists. A large cache of weapons and equipment was recovered from the site,” the Army said in a statement.
Security forces have cordoned off the area, and search operations are continuing to ensure no additional infiltrators remain in the region.
Amit Shah Calls for High Alert Along Borders
Following the incident, Union Home Minister Amit Shah directed security agencies to remain on maximum alert along the LoC and the International Border as winter approaches. He emphasised that terrorist groups may attempt infiltration by exploiting snowbound terrain and poor visibility conditions.
Shah’s directive came during a high-level security review meeting held in New Delhi to assess the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting was attended by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Union Home Secretary, Chief of Army Staff, Director of Intelligence Bureau, Chief Secretary and DGP of J&K, as well as senior officials from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and the Union Home Ministry.
Officials discussed strategies to enhance border surveillance, improve coordination between agencies, and ensure quick response mechanisms to thwart infiltration attempts.
Security Tightened Ahead of Winter
With the onset of snowfall in higher reaches, infiltration attempts across the LoC tend to rise. The Army and JKP have been conducting intensified operations in Kupwara, Baramulla, and Rajouri sectors to prevent militants from crossing over.
The recovery of weapons and communication equipment from the neutralised terrorists indicates continued efforts by Pakistan-based terror outfits to push infiltrators into Indian territory.
