A fresh cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal by tomorrow, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Bhubaneswar said on Wednesday. The system, however, is not expected to intensify significantly, officials clarified.
Rain and Thunderstorms to Persist
Despite the low likelihood of intensification, thunderstorms with lightning and moderate rain are expected to continue across several parts of Odisha over the next few days. The Met office has also predicted sporadic heavy rainfall in some coastal and southern districts.
Monsoon Withdrawal May Be Delayed
The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Odisha, initially anticipated around October 15, is now likely to be delayed. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that current weather patterns are unfavourable for monsoon retreat over the next five days.
Gradual changes in wind direction and humidity levels could create favourable conditions for the monsoon to start withdrawing from western Odisha later this week.
Yellow Warning Issued for 24 Districts
The RMC has issued a yellow warning for 24 districts, including Malkangiri, Koraput, Khordha, Puri, Cuttack, and Kendrapara, forecasting rain and lightning activity.
For October 10, a statewide yellow alert has been issued, advising residents across Odisha to remain vigilant against possible thunderstorms and lightning occurrences.
Safety Advisory
Authorities have urged people to avoid taking shelter under trees or near water bodies during lightning strikes. The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has asked district administrations to stay prepared for any weather-related emergencies.
