Mumbai, Oct 8, 2025: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived in Mumbai on Wednesday, beginning his first official visit to India since taking office in 2024. He was welcomed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, and Governor Acharya.
High-Level Talks Scheduled
Starmer will travel to New Delhi on Thursday to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two leaders are expected to review the progress of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), signed in July 2025, and issue a joint communique at Raj Bhavan.
The visit comes against the backdrop of tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, adding further significance to the strengthening of India-UK economic ties.
Engagement with Business Leaders
During his stay in Mumbai, Starmer will hold discussions with top industry leaders over a business lunch. Later, he will address the Global Fintech Fest at the Jio World Centre, Bandra-Kurla Complex, highlighting opportunities for collaboration in the digital and financial sectors.
Starmer’s Vision on India-UK Trade
Ahead of his visit, Starmer emphasized the importance of the trade pact, calling it “the best secured by any country”.
“It’s not just a piece of paper, it’s a launchpad for growth. With India set to become the third-largest economy by 2028, and trade about to become quicker and cheaper, the opportunities are unparalleled,” Starmer said.
The UK Prime Minister added that he would be “flying the flag for British business alongside 125 leading companies”, noting that enhanced growth in India would create “more choice, opportunity, and jobs at home for the British people.”
Strengthening Strategic Ties
The meeting between Modi and Starmer is expected to further advance cooperation in trade, technology, defense, and climate change, strengthening the India-UK strategic partnership.
