PM Modi Launches Maruti Suzuki’s First EV “e-Vitara” at Gujarat Facility

Hansalpur, Gujarat (August 25): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated Maruti Suzuki’s electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facility in Hansalpur and launched the company’s first battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e-Vitara. The launch marks a landmark moment in India’s pursuit of green mobility and self-reliance in the EV sector.

“Today is a special day in India’s quest for self-reliance and being a hub for green mobility. At the programme in Hansalpur, e-VITARA will be flagged off. This Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) is made in India and will be exported to over a hundred nations,” said PM Modi during the ceremony.

The event was also attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Japan’s Ambassador to India Keiichi Ono, underscoring Indo-Japanese collaboration in India’s EV growth.

e-Vitara: Launch and Global Plans

The e-Vitara is Maruti Suzuki’s first entry into the battery electric vehicle segment and has been designed for both Indian and international consumers. The model will be exported to over 100 countries, cementing India’s place in the global EV supply chain.

  • India launch date: September 3, 2025

  • Already launched in: United Kingdom

  • Competitors in India: Hyundai Creta Electric, MG ZS EV, and Mahindra BE.6

e-Vitara: Key Features & Charging Details

The SUV comes with 18-inch aero-optimised alloy wheels wrapped in Goodyear tyres and will be offered in two battery pack options:

  • 49 kWh battery pack

    • 6.5 hours on a 7 kW AC charger

    • 4.5 hours on an 11 kW charger

  • 61 kWh battery pack

    • 9 hours on a 7 kW AC charger

    • 5.5 hours on an 11 kW charger

Both variants support DC fast charging, enabling 80% charge in approximately 45 minutes.

Boost to India’s Battery Manufacturing Ecosystem

Alongside the EV launch, PM Modi also announced the commencement of hybrid battery electrode production at a Gujarat-based plant, a move expected to strengthen India’s domestic battery ecosystem and reduce dependence on imports.

Industry experts say the twin announcements highlight India’s dual strategy — expanding its EV footprint globally while simultaneously building a self-reliant supply chain for critical components.

With the e-Vitara rollout, Maruti Suzuki joins the EV race, and India takes a decisive step toward its ambition of becoming a global hub for electric mobility.
