Bhubaneswar, August 24: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted widespread rainfall across Odisha till August 27, warning that ongoing showers may dampen the festive spirit of Ganesh Puja and Nuakhai. The rain is being triggered by a low-pressure system currently active over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining regions, which is expected to move northwestwards towards Jharkhand in the next 24 hours.
Heavy Rainfall Alerts Issued
Under the system’s influence, several parts of Odisha have been experiencing intense rainfall. The IMD has issued a yellow warning for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda districts, cautioning residents about heavy downpour. Additionally, 16 districts have been placed on alert for thunderstorms with lightning and wind speeds of 30–40 kmph.
More Rain Till August 27
The weather office has warned that some regions may witness very heavy rainfall, while other districts are likely to experience moderate to heavy showers over the next three days. Authorities have urged people in low-lying and flood-prone areas to stay alert.
Advisory for Fishermen
The IMD has also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha coast as well as over the North Bay of Bengal, citing rough sea conditions.
Fresh Low-Pressure Predicted
Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast the formation of a fresh low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha–West Bengal coasts, around August 25, which may further intensify the rainfall situation in the state.
With continuous showers likely to persist, the festive celebrations of Ganesh Puja and Nuakhai may face disruptions across Odisha.
