Mohali, August 22: Punjabi cinema has lost one of its most beloved stars. Veteran actor and comedian Jaswinder Bhalla passed away on Friday morning at Fortis Hospital, Mohali, following a brain stroke. He was 64. According to reports, he breathed his last at around 4 AM, and his last rites will be held on August 23 at 12 PM at Balongi Cremation Ground, Mohali.
The news of his demise has left fans and colleagues heartbroken, with tributes pouring in across social media. Known for his sharp satire and impeccable comic timing, Bhalla was a true legend of Punjabi entertainment, bringing smiles to millions through films and stage performances.
A Career That Defined Comedy in Punjab
Born on May 4, 1960, in Ludhiana, Jaswinder Bhalla rose to fame with the launch of “Chhankata” in 1988 — a satirical audio-video series that became a cultural phenomenon. His character ‘Chacha Chatar Singh’ struck a chord with audiences for its rustic humour and witty social commentary. Over the years, around 27 instalments of Chhankata were released, earning him immense love worldwide.
In cinema, Bhalla carved an unforgettable legacy with roles in blockbuster Punjabi films such as Jatt and Juliet, Sardaar Ji, and the Carry On Jatta franchise. His portrayal of Advocate Dhillon in Carry On Jatta remains one of the most iconic performances in Punjabi cinema, with his catchphrases and dialogues continuing to resonate with fans.
Bhalla’s final screen appearance was in 2024’s “Shinda Shinda No Papa”, alongside Gippy Grewal and Hina Khan.
