IMD Alert: Low-Pressure Area Over Bay of Bengal to Bring Heavy Rainfall Across Central and West India

New Delhi, Aug 18, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that a low-pressure area has formed over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, off the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts. The system is likely to intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours, triggering widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of central India and the west coast in the coming days.

Heavy Rainfall Alert for West Coast and Central India

According to IMD, extremely heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan (including Mumbai), Goa, and the ghat regions of central Maharashtra till August 19, and over Gujarat till August 20, with Saurashtra likely to witness intense showers on August 19–20. Rainfall activity is expected to peak on August 19.

Other regions such as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha will also see heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days. The IMD specifically warned of isolated extremely heavy rainfall over coastal Andhra Pradesh during August 17–18, Odisha and Telangana on August 18.

So far, this monsoon season’s intense rainfall has been concentrated over the Western Himalayas and foothill states, particularly Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh.

System Movement and Weather Dynamics

The fresh low-pressure area, which developed at 5:30 am (IST) Sunday, is being driven by an upper air cyclonic circulation. It is expected to move west-northwestwards, intensify into a depression, and cross the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coasts around forenoon of August 19.

Meanwhile, another low-pressure system that formed on Saturday over south Chhattisgarh has moved towards Vidarbha and adjoining areas. It is likely to weaken gradually and reach Gujarat by August 18 morning as a remnant cyclonic circulation.

Additionally, multiple cyclonic circulations are active:

  • Over the northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining south Gujarat-Konkan region,

  • Across north Marathwada, Vidarbha, and south Chhattisgarh.

These combined weather systems are expected to fuel widespread rain and thunderstorms across large parts of the country.

Advisory for Citizens

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas, especially Konkan, Goa, Maharashtra’s ghats, Gujarat, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh, to stay alert to warnings, as flooding and waterlogging risks remain high due to the forecast of intense showers.
