New Delhi, August 12, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated 184 newly constructed Type-VII multi-storey flats for Members of Parliament (MPs) at Baba Kharak Singh Marg in the national capital. The state-of-the-art complex is designed to address the shortage of adequate housing for MPs while promoting sustainable, space-efficient urban living.
During the inauguration, PM Modi planted a Sindoor sapling, interacted with sramajeevis (workers) who contributed to the project, and addressed the gathering.
Modern, Spacious, and Self-Sufficient
The Type-VII complex has been developed as a self-contained facility to cater to both residential and official needs of MPs. Built in a vertical housing format due to limited land availability in Delhi, the project focuses on optimising land use and reducing long-term maintenance costs.
Each flat offers around 5,000 sq ft of carpet area, with designated spaces for residential purposes, office work, and staff accommodation. Interestingly, reports suggest that these flats are even more spacious than Type-VIII bungalows, which are currently the top tier in government housing.
The premises also feature a community centre for social and official gatherings, enhancing the MPs’ ability to host events within the complex.
Sustainable and Inclusive Design
The project has been awarded a GRIHA 3-star rating for green buildings and adheres to the National Building Code (NBC) 2016. Sustainable features include:
-
Renewable energy systems
-
Energy-efficient fittings
-
Effective waste management systems
Constructed with monolithic concrete using aluminium shuttering, the buildings are earthquake-resistant and equipped with advanced security systems. The design is Divyang-friendly, ensuring accessibility for all residents.
Eco-Friendly Vision for Urban Housing
By incorporating green technology and resource-efficient systems, the new flats are expected to reduce operational costs while minimising environmental impact. Officials say the project sets a benchmark for future government housing initiatives in India.
