Koraput received a major healthcare boost on Sunday as Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated a 650-bed teaching hospital at Shaheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital, built at a cost of ₹280 crore. He also announced the early construction of the six-lane Jeypore–Berhampur–Bhubaneswar economic corridor.
CM Majhi said the facility will benefit patients from Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, eliminating the need for long-distance travel for treatment. The hospital offers advanced diagnostic and treatment services, including CT scan, dialysis, mammography, and a dedicated oxygen plant. A separate cancer hospital, funded with ₹41.15 crore, is also coming up adjacent to the complex.
Highlighting government healthcare schemes, CM Majhi noted that Ayushman Bharat–PMJAY and Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana together cover 3.46 crore people in the state. In Koraput, over 3 lakh cards have been issued, enabling beneficiaries to avail up to ₹10 lakh cashless treatment annually.
The CM also announced plans to fill long-vacant medical posts and set up new medical colleges in Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, and Nabarangpur. On the occasion, he distributed financial aid to beneficiaries of various health schemes.
