India Post to Discontinue Registered Post Service from September 1, 2025; Merges Features with Speed Post

New Delhi, August 7, 2025 — India Post has officially announced that it will phase out its iconic Registered Post service starting September 1, 2025, marking the end of a trusted communication method that has served the nation for over five decades.

The move comes as part of a larger effort to modernize and streamline postal operations. Registered Post’s core features—secure handling, tracking, and proof of delivery—will now be offered as value-added options under the Speed Post service, allowing users to continue accessing similar services with faster delivery times.

Why is Registered Post Being Discontinued?

India Post cited declining usage, rising digitization, and evolving customer preferences as key reasons for retiring the standalone Registered Post service. From 244.4 million items in 2011-12, usage dropped to 184.6 million by 2019-20—well before the pandemic significantly accelerated the shift to digital communication.

“The merger of Registered Post features into Speed Post will simplify our services while maintaining reliability and security for our users,” an India Post official said.

What Will Change for Users?

While the Registered Post label will be discontinued, its functionalities will not be lost. Customers sending critical documents—such as legal notices, appointment letters, and official communications—can still opt for delivery tracking and proof of delivery by paying an additional fee under the Speed Post framework.

For instance, a standard Rs 5 letter can still be registered for Rs 17 extra, retaining key features of the old service. However, the higher cost has raised concerns among rural and economically disadvantaged users who heavily rely on affordable postal options.

A Step Towards Postal Modernization

India Post believes that consolidating services will enhance efficiency, reduce operational costs, and align with the Digital India vision. The transition, while nostalgic for many, is seen as necessary to keep pace with modern communication needs and the growing role of digital and private courier services.

As part of the broader postal reform, India Post continues to focus on speed, transparency, and digital integration to remain relevant in a fast-evolving communication ecosystem.
