Modi Surpasses Indira Gandhi as Second-Longest Serving PM

New Delhi, July 25 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday achieved a historic political milestone by becoming India’s second-longest serving Prime Minister in consecutive terms, overtaking Indira Gandhi’s uninterrupted tenure from 1966 to 1977. As of July 25, 2025, Modi has completed 4,078 consecutive days in office since taking over on May 26, 2014.

This achievement places him behind only Jawaharlal Nehru, the country’s first Prime Minister, who held office for 16 years and 286 days from August 15, 1947, to May 27, 1964.

A Historic Political Journey

Modi, 74, is the first Prime Minister born in independent India and also the longest-serving Prime Minister from a non-Congress party. His political career has been marked by consistent electoral dominance, charismatic leadership, and a strong public mandate across three consecutive Lok Sabha elections.

  • First Term: Began on May 26, 2014, after BJP won 272 seats — the first majority in three decades.

  • Second Term: In 2019, BJP surpassed its previous tally, winning 303 seats.

  • Third Term: In 2024, despite falling short of the halfway mark, BJP emerged as the single largest party, forming the government with the support of NDA allies.

Modi’s unbroken tenure now exceeds Indira Gandhi’s 4,077-day streak, which lasted from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977. She had a second stint as PM from January 14, 1980, to October 31, 1984, before her assassination.

Notable Political Records Set by Modi

  • Longest-serving non-Congress PM in Indian history.

  • Only non-Congress PM to have completed two full terms and now into a third consecutive term.

  • Only non-Congress leader to win a majority on his own in Lok Sabha elections.

  • First sitting PM since Indira Gandhi (1971) to return to power after a full term.

  • Only PM apart from Nehru to win three consecutive general elections as the leader of a party.

Before becoming PM, Modi was also the longest-serving Chief Minister of Gujarat, holding the post for over 12 years from 2001 to 2014.

Significance of the Milestone

This feat cements Modi’s position as one of the most enduring and influential political figures in Indian post-independence history. His political journey — from a humble background in Gujarat to the pinnacle of Indian leadership — reflects not only organizational discipline and electoral strategy, but also a transformational impact on Indian governance and global diplomacy.

With nearly 11 years at the helm of India’s central government, Modi’s leadership has spanned a wide array of events — from major economic reforms and foreign policy realignments, to navigating COVID-19, implementing digital governance initiatives, and addressing internal security and social welfare.
