New Delhi, July 12, 2025 — Mild tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR on Friday evening after a 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck Jhajjar district in Haryana, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed. This is the second earthquake to hit the region in two consecutive days.
According to NCS, the quake occurred at 7:49 PM IST at a depth of 10 km, with Rohtak and Bahadurgarh among the other affected areas in Haryana. Although no damage or casualties were reported, residents across Delhi and surrounding areas took to social media to confirm feeling the tremors.
Second Quake in 2 Days
On Thursday morning, a stronger earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale also hit near Jhajjar, causing panic in parts of Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, and nearby towns. The back-to-back quakes have raised concerns about increased seismic activity in the region.
Why Delhi is Prone to Earthquakes
Delhi lies in Seismic Zone IV, which is considered a high-damage risk zone according to the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). Earthquakes in this zone typically range between 5.0 and 6.0 in magnitude, with occasional quakes reaching up to 7.0 or 8.0.
Seismologists explain that the ongoing tectonic activity in North India, particularly the collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, is responsible for frequent tremors. These colliding plates accumulate stress over time, and when the built-up energy is released, it results in an earthquake.
What Experts Say
Experts advise residents in Delhi-NCR to stay alert and aware of earthquake preparedness protocols, especially given the capital’s vulnerability. While Friday’s quake was minor, the recurrence of tremors underscores the importance of urban resilience planning in densely populated zones.
