Puri, 2025 — The divine Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri continues with unwavering faith and devotion, even as authorities respond swiftly and compassionately following a tragic crowd incident near the Gundicha Temple early Monday morning. The Odisha government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi, has taken immediate action to reinforce safety and reassure pilgrims from across the globe.
Incident Addressed with Prompt Action
During the early hours of the second day of the Rath Yatra, a large crowd gathered near the Gundicha Temple to witness the arrival of the sacred chariots. Unfortunately, an unexpected surge led to the loss of three lives, including two women and one elderly man, and injuries to 10 others. All affected individuals were from Khurda district and had travelled to Puri in devotion.
Expressing deep sorrow and empathy, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi immediately announced a compensation of ₹25 lakh for each bereaved family and has vowed exemplary measures to ensure such incidents are not repeated. “We are treating this with the seriousness it deserves. Devotees’ safety is our utmost priority,” he said.
Leadership Responds Decisively
Recognizing the need for stronger administrative coordination, the government promptly made key personnel changes, replacing both the District Collector and Superintendent of Police in Puri to ensure enhanced crowd management for the remaining rituals of the Rath Yatra.
The government also assured the public of reinforced security, expanded medical response teams, and improved traffic control systems for the upcoming events — Adapa Bije, Bahuda Yatra, and Suna Besha.
A Festival of Faith and Resilience
Despite the unfortunate incident, the spirit of the Rath Yatra remains strong. Pilgrims continue to pour in with devotion, and the Gundicha Temple resonates with hymns, prayers, and spiritual energy as the Holy Trinity—Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra—grace their aunt’s abode.
The event has seen the seamless support of local volunteers, spiritual leaders, and civil society who have come forward in solidarity, showcasing Odisha’s compassionate community spirit.
Voices of Unity and Support
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan expressed confidence in the state government’s measures, stating, “The CM has taken full responsibility and is ensuring corrective steps. Let’s keep faith that the upcoming days of Rath Yatra will be safe and spiritually fulfilling for all.”
As the world watches Puri, the resilience of Odisha’s people, the spiritual fervor of the Rath Yatra, and the government’s swift response shine through as a collective reminder that even in moments of adversity, faith, responsibility, and unity can carry a festival forward with dignity.
