Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025: Holy Chariots Reach Gundicha Temple on Day 2, Marking a Sacred Milestone

Puri, June 30, 2025 — On the second day of the revered Jagannath Rath Yatra, the majestic chariots carrying Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra have reached their destination — the Gundicha Temple. This spiritual milestone marks one of the most sacred moments of the nine-day festival, symbolizing the deities’ annual visit to their maternal aunt’s home. Thousands of devotees gathered along the Grand Road in Puri to witness this divine journey, chanting prayers and pulling the massive wooden chariots in a display of unshakable faith and unity.

What is the Jagannath Rath Yatra?

Known as the Chariot Festival or Gundicha Yatra, the Rath Yatra is celebrated annually during the Hindu month of Ashadha (June–July). The highlight of the festival is the public procession of the deities in ornately decorated, gigantic wooden chariots, which are pulled by devotees from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, covering nearly 3 km. The festival is a centuries-old tradition and a unique blend of spirituality, devotion, and cultural richness.

Why Do the Deities Visit Gundicha Temple?

As per sacred lore, the Gundicha Temple is considered the home of Queen Gundicha, the aunt of Lord Jagannath. Every year, Lord Jagannath and his siblings make this symbolic family visit, staying for nine days. The journey reflects divine affection, spiritual hospitality, and the bond between relatives in the cosmic order. It’s believed to be a divine example of love and familial connection extended to the human realm.

Spiritual Significance of the Gundicha Temple

The Gundicha Temple holds immense importance during the Rath Yatra. As per scriptures, witnessing Lord Jagannath at this temple during the Yatra is deeply auspicious and may lead to moksha (liberation). Devotees from across the world travel to Puri to seek the blessings of the Lord during his temporary stay at the temple, transforming the town into a vibrant center of spiritual energy and devotion.

Nine Days of Divine Presence

During the nine days that the deities reside at Gundicha Temple, various rituals, offerings, prayers, and cultural events are performed. The atmosphere is filled with the sounds of devotional songs, conch shells, and traditional instruments. The temple complex becomes a hub of religious festivities, drawing people from all walks of life.

The visit concludes with the Bahuda Yatra, or the return journey, where the deities make their way back to the Jagannath Temple, culminating in another grand event.

Why is the Gundicha Temple So Important?

Beyond its ritualistic significance, the Gundicha Temple symbolizes divine hospitality, love, and inclusivity. It represents the warm welcome extended to the divine guests and offers devotees a once-a-year chance to connect with the deities in a more intimate and peaceful setting, away from the main temple’s daily routines.
