Odisha on Alert as Low-Pressure System Brews Over Bay of Bengal; Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm Likely

Bhubaneswar, May 14: With a low-pressure area expected to form over the Bay of Bengal, the Odisha government has issued alerts and directed district administrations to stay on high alert for possible heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and related incidents over the coming days.

In a message to all District Collectors, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) on Tuesday instructed them to remain fully prepared to tackle any adverse weather conditions. Collectors have been asked to submit immediate damage reports—if any—arising from thunderstorms, whirlwinds, hailstorms, lightning, or heavy rainfall for government action.

The SRC emphasized that districts under orange and yellow alerts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) must keep their administrative machinery ready to respond swiftly to any emergencies. Citizens have been advised to closely monitor weather updates and take safe shelter during thunderstorms, especially to avoid the risks posed by lightning.

Additionally, strict implementation of safety instructions for fishermen has been mandated. The coastal regions, particularly those along the Bay of Bengal, are expected to experience squally weather conditions with wind speeds exceeding 45 kmph between May 29 and June 1, as per IMD’s warning.

Weather System and Forecast

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a cyclonic circulation was observed over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal as of 5:30 am on Tuesday. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region, with potential intensification in the next 48 hours.

This developing system is expected to bring widespread rainfall across Odisha, which may last till May 30. The IMD further stated that the system, coupled with an active trough line, could create favourable conditions for the southwest monsoon to advance into Odisha earlier than usual.

The department has also warned of gusty surface winds and rough sea conditions, particularly over the central and northern Bay of Bengal and along and off the Odisha coast from May 29 to June 1.

Precautionary Measures and Public Safety

The state government has urged residents, especially in vulnerable areas, to avoid outdoor activities during intense weather, remain indoors during lightning activity, and to follow safety advisories issued by local authorities and the IMD.

Emergency response teams, control rooms, and disaster relief units across the state have been placed on alert to mitigate the potential impact of the incoming weather system.
