India Slams Pakistan at UN Over Indus Waters Treaty, Puts Pact in Abeyance After Pahalgam Terror Attack

Latest Political news

India strongly rebuked Pakistan at the UN over “disinformation” on the Indus Waters Treaty, suspending the 65-year-old agreement following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, which left 26 people dead.

Responding at the UN’s Arria Formula meeting, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, asserted that the treaty would remain in abeyance until Pakistan ends its support for cross-border terrorism. The Indian envoy termed Pakistan the “global epicentre of terror”, citing decades of hostility and repeated violations of the treaty’s spirit.

Key points raised by Ambassador Harish:

  1. Breach of Good Faith: India entered the 1960 treaty with goodwill, but Pakistan violated its essence by waging wars and sponsoring terror attacks—over 20,000 Indians killed in four decades.

  2. Need for Modernization: Changes in security threats, climate needs, clean energy demands, and dam infrastructure safety require treaty modifications, but Pakistan blocks every attempt.

  3. Repeated Obstruction: India has formally sought discussions on treaty updates, but Pakistan has consistently rejected proposals, limiting India’s legitimate water rights.

  4. Response to Terrorism: The suspension is a direct result of Pakistan’s continued state-sponsored terror.

India launched “Operation Sindoor” on May 7, striking terror camps in Pakistan and PoK after tracing cross-border links to the Pahalgam attack. Pakistan retaliated with a missile and drone assault, which was successfully thwarted. India responded by targeting airfields, and hostilities ceased on May 10 after a brief flare-up.
